Here at The Golf Place we spend much of the year wishing there were more golf tournaments in the UK we had the time and money to get to. So it was terrific to be able to attend the British Masters for a couple of days last weekend.

If you’re reading this, you probably watched a lot of it yourself, either in person or on TV. So there’s no need to go into too many details on how the result ended up. True enough, but that Friday score contained what I think is the best shot we saw. Mrs TGP almost stepped on something… the Italian’s ball, sitting there on the buggy path, twenty metres away from safety.

Lying in between the ball and the green were (i) trees (ii) an ice cream van (iii) half a dozen chemical toilets (iv) beer stands. I don’t think Mannassero even had a view of the pin or the green, such was the amount of clutter in between himself and his target. Ended up on the green, near enough to the pin that he plonked it in for a birdie. Now that was a shot – and it came from somebody out of contention for making the cut, let alone the tournament. It just goes to show that these guys are really good.

Friday lunchtime. As we stood at the 12th green, a bizarre apparition hove into view. What could this be? A caddie, wearing long pinkish shorts over black tights. Now, it was vaguely cold that day, with the risk of rain, but no other club-carrier was kitted out like this. He looked, frankly, a bit ridiculous.

It transpired that this was Romain Langasque’s caddie. Still, at least the man himself was dressed as you’d expect, wearing normal gear including a standard pair of black golf trousers, right? On the 13th tee, having assessed the risk of rain as having faded away and the temperature now being high enough, Langasque carefully started to remove said black trousers and down they came. As it turned out, these were waterproofs and below were a pair of bright red breeks, bright enough to get at least a couple of visitors reaching for their shades.

The other trouser incident of the weekend concerned Lucas Herbert’s orange pantaloons, however I am led to believe he has form for this sort of thing.

After the hooter went off, it started to spot. Then it started to bloot it down.

All around the course, we had noticed, were dozens of minibuses, hidden away from likely ball locations between dunes and below trees. Multicoloured, Flower Jansport Big Student RucksackThey swung into action and as we trotted off for cover we were overtaken by van after van of precious golfing cargo. It’s alright for them, eh?

Having made it to the food/bar area by the 8th green and 2nd fairway we decided to stick it out under the umbrella long with hundreds of others, sheltering under the awning of the Fudge Bus and hiding in the lavs. Rain turned to hail, pints of beer were watered down still more. Golf umbrellas began to merge to form a larger canopy, like the shields of a Roman squadron arranged to repel arrows. Mild tutting was heard, foil-wrapped sandwiches were uncovered, inappropriate clothing choices were bemoaned.

And then… it stopped hailing. Some, taking this as a sign everything was now AOK, took down their umbrellas. However, it may having stopped hailing but it was still tipping it down with rain. The umbrellas went back into the sky.

Eventually, of course, the clouds cleared, as can often happen so rapidly along the coast. From our vantage pint above the 8th green, we saw the motorcade speed by. We like to think he’s a man of the people.

The 11th at Hillside GC runs between two high dunes and sweeps downhill before rising to a green set just in front of trees. It’s a visually stunning hole and one of the best places to watch the golfers do their thing.

On Saturday, Grant Forrest and Matthias Schwab both saw their tee shots veer right into varying degrees of trouble. Forrest was amongst tall reeds;Kotobukiya Frame Arms Girl Jinrai Plastic Model Kit (Indigo Version) Schwab slightly better off, having landed on trampled ground where spectators had been walking. We paused to take in their rescue shots.

Crouching to study his lie, Schwab’s trousers rode up (we aren’t obsessed by trousers, honest) to reveal his socks. His socks had “SCHWAB” written around the top, the elasticated bit by the ankle.

More questions than answers with this. Were they a present from a well meaning aunt? Was this a bizarre form of sponsorship deal from his own family? Was Schwab’s caddie wearing socks with “SCHWAB’S CADDIE” on them?

One of the reasons we love attending events in person is you get to see and hear things the TV cameras don’t pick up. James Morrison didn’t have a great tournament and I doubt his approach to the third made the TV coverage,SAMSONITE Disney Forever Casual Daypack 32 Centimeters 10.5 bluee (Dumbo Feathers) so not many would have witnessed this.

He didn’t seem happy with his stroke, worried he caught it too well had overshot the green, and while the ball was in the air called after it “aaargh, stay in Liverpool!”

On Saturday, we sat ourselves down at the sixth green for an extended stay, as the final dozen or so groups were about to parade through this part of the course.

Turns out we weren’t the only ones with the same idea, and we were soon joined by a motley collection of patrons,Silver Bauble Personalised Christmas New Year Holiday Party Thank You Cards including a kid next to us who appeared to be wearing a football kit. Paying it no mind, we resumed our assessment of the chips and putts in front of us, and embarked upon our packed lunches.

After a while I noticed that the kid was wearing a full (change) Tottenham Hotspur kit. Now, this would be unexpected in this part of the north west any week of the year, but this week in particular? Not long after, one of golf’s most decent coves, Robert Karlsson, gave the kid a signed ball. Maybe he’s Spurs too.

Speaking of the lofty Swede, his group made it to at least the tenth hole with KARLSSON A on the score board being carried around with the group. We selected 14 golfers for each way bets. Six of them made the top ten to qualify for a payout. We still didn’t make a profit as the odds of those we had backed were too short. Thank you, Mr Kinhult… Wallace or Pepperell would have been just lovely, oh well never mind…
